Artsakh

Artsakh (Armenian:Արցախ, was the tenth province (nahang) of the Kingdom of armenia from 189 BC until 387 AD
Artsakh covered the north-eastern range of the Armenian Plateau and was mostly mountainous and afforested.
By medieval times, from at least the 9th century, Artsakh has been a stronghold of Armenian national identity. Its people spoke a local Eastern Armenian dialect, the Artsakhian dialect (today known as the Karabakh dialect), which is mentioned by 7th century grammarian Stepanos Syunetsi in his earliest record of the Armenian dialects
In 301 Armenia was converted to Christianity. Artsakh became a major stronghold for Armenian missionaries to spread the Christianity in the neighboring countries.
Recorded at the end of the XIX century, the name of Artsakh came from the words "sar" - mountain and "tsakh" - forest, i.e. mountainous and forestry (the main factors of local landscape). Every valley in Artsakh is original and unique. In this beautiful country there are many churches, monasteries, ruins of old settlements, bridges, castles, springs, mills, khachkars, and cemeteries.  Almost all the mountainous parts of Artsakh are covered with forests. Artsakh is rich with nut and mulberry forests. Artsakh has its town symbol "We Are Our Mountains"
"We Are Our Mountains" (Մենք ենք մեր լեռները) is a large Armenian monument located in Stepanakert, the capital city of the unrecognized Nagorno Karabakh Republic

The sculpture, completed in 1967 by Sargis Baghdasaryan is widely regarded as a symbol of Nagorno-Karabakh. The monument is made from volcanic tufa, and depicts an old and woman hewn from rock, representing the mountain people of Karabakh.
